Evaluation question 4
HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
New media technology is highly important to us. It has allowed us to research, plan and construct our trailer effectively as well as help us with the marketing and advertisement of our products. There are many benefits that have come from new technologies for both consumers and media institutes, making the exhibition of media products much easier and cheaper. Technology has highly developed and allowed us to experience media aspects on different types of devices from computers to smart phones.
Social Networking by Amy
In order to obtain sufficient audience research, we used social networking to send out questions and receive answers which I then had to screenshot and put on the group blog. As social networking is highly associated to our generation, we hoped for a high response rate as sending out a questionnaire through social networks would relate more to the younger audience. Using Twitter, WhatsApp and Messenger to interact with our audience we received a higher response rate and therefore gained accurate results, helping us to achieve a final product suitable for the target audience. |
I used WhatsApp, iMessage, SurveyMonkey and Twitter to interact with my target audience.

PhotoShop by Amy
I used Photoshop when editing the main image for the poster and magazine. I used this as it has a wide range of tools that I had access to in order to edit the image. I played around with each tool's function and learnt skills such as adjusting brightness or sectioning certain areas off for individual editing. Photoshop also allows you to add layers, helping you place or move around certain objects. This program aided me with the editing of the poster an gave me access to editing techniques that other editing programmes may not have provided.
YouTube by Lexcye
Research & planning
When gathering research we used YouTube to be able to access the existing horror trailers which were our use of real media text. Viewing high budget well known horror movie trailers, allowed us to be able to gather information on which trailers were the best in terms of the amount of likes, views and positive comments that it got. We searched for specific horror trailers such as Insidious and The Conjuring and watched it several time on Youtube to follow conventions and gain ideas for our production work. Construction We created a Youtube account from which we posted videos that contained examples of the work we did for the planning of the trailer, and the magazine and posters. These videos included camera work, horror soundtracks, our summer horror trailer and other videos such as the behind the scenes footage of our horror trailer 'Never Sleep Again'. Evaluation In the evaluation stage we used it to compare our final production with other videos and see if our trailer actually looked like a real horror movie teaser trailer. We also used it to see the and judge the success of of our trailer by looking at the amount of views, likes, and dislikes that it got from it. |
YouTube is an international video sharing platform which allows anyone to post videos on any topics they'd like. We were able to use YouTube in all the stages of construction, research and planning. It was a platform that we used within and outside the classroom. YouTube allows any person with a google or YouTube account to either like, comment, or subscribe to the channel of the person that uploaded the video.
Above are a list of the videos we have been posting throughout all the stages of research and planning, construction, and evaluation.

Above shows how we used Convert2mp3.net to convert the sounds and music we used in our horror trailer.
Construction
For every sound of music that we used we searched youtube and looked for music that fit the specific scenes we had shot. We then copied the URL into the online video converter and downloaded all the mp3 files onto the computer which we then transferred into final cut pro.

Adobe InDesign CS6 By Lexcye
InDesign is a desktop publishing software created by Adobe which can be used to create flyers, posters, magazines, newspapers, books and many more documents. There are different versions of InDesign, however in our construction we used CS6 because that is the only available version we were able to use.
Research and Planning
We used InDesign in our planning by creating a rough test magazine before creating our final one. Doing this helped us see what looked best and how we wanted the magazine to be laid out. This stage also helped us figure out that the photo that we used for the front cover of the magazine was not suitable and therefore we made the decision to change it and take new ones. |
Construction
Below I have explained why we decided to use InDesign, and how we used it in order to put together our final production of the front cover of the magazine.

Google by Simon
Another form of Digital Media Technology that we used is Google. Specifically, this was used mostly for our research and construction stages.
It is an advanced search website, which includes search, cloud computing, online advertising technologies and software. Google is an amazing tool, as it directs you to millions of sites based on what you print down to look for. Based on Google's PageRank system, you are likely to find the best content possible based on what you search for, as it puts the most popular links at the top. Not also is it a good tool for finding useful links, it also has several image, video and shopping content, as well as maps. This came in handy as we used Google Maps to help us find our shooting locations, shopping to purchase costume and props, and images for a variety of reasons, including looking at real media posters for inspiration. Google is a very successful Digital Media Technology because it has helped us: learn the codes and conventions of media through research, gain influences through accessing links to existing media texts, as well as find links for free sound effects to include in our sound design. |
FINAL CUT PRO X by simon
As a group, we used Final Cut Pro X a lot in order to make our final trailer as well as our storyboard/sound animatic. At first, we weren't very confident in the use of this software because we didn't have a lot of experience in it. We haven't used it before so our confidence was quite low when it came to using this. However, we were able to get used t0 using this software quite quickly, as it is quite easy to navigate and we used it very frequently. We used final cut to create transitions in between shots in order to make the trailer flow better, to adjust the exact time of each shot to match what we wanted it to be as well as speed up/slow down footage in order to make it fit in with out horror genre more. Final Cut Pro X made it very simple to add in slides in between shots with text or black screens to break up our trailer. We could easily choose how long these would be seen on the screen for. The use of Photoshop in our AS portfolio really helped us getting used to Final Cut Pro X because they are quite similar when it comes to editing footage. You can easily adapt into using final cut if you have had experience with other good editing software previously.
What did Final Cut Pro X allow us to do?
• Add in different transition and adjust the colour gradient.
• Apply knowledge from other editing software (Photoshop) to understand how to use this better.
• Edit our footage and then export it
• Place audio clips on top of our project, fitting it together with out video clips.

Apple imac By simon
Throughout the whole process of producing our media products (Trailer, Magazine and Poster), we used the Apple iMac computers provided by our college, with software such as Final Cut Pro X and Photoshop already installed on them. Apple's Final Cut Pro X is one of the best pieces of software created to edit video. Therefore, being able to use this and edit it on a 27" screen really gave us he best possible editing experience. When it came to doing work outside of lessons, we priorities to get the major media product work to be completed within school hours. However, completing this work at school allowed us to have a team input on it instead of individually working on them. Some team members also had iMac's or MacBooks at home, on which they were able to edit some of the media products.
Mac's are very highly advanced in technology among other computers on the market. They are often professionally used to edit films or songs in professional studios. They are fully equipt with all the necessary tools we needed in order to complete our media products.
