BASIC CAMERA SHOTS BY simon and lexcye
Throughout this task, we had to show a variety of camera shots and angles that we could use in the filming process. This was good practice for our upcoming horror production task as we are now clear on what shots look better than others as we had time to experiment with them.
Reasons why these shots are used
TRACKING SHOT
This shot tracks, follows the character letting the viewers know where they are heading.
ZOOM SHOT
Gives you a closer look at the characters features, and facial expressions.
WORMS EYE VIEW
This shot is used as the victims view of the antagonist in most horror films.
POV SHOT
POV shots stands for point f view shot. This is specific to one of the characters since the shot includes only what they are seeing.
MEDIUM LONG SHOT
This medium long shot in horror films is normally used when a character is standing next to a building, most of the time a house.
|
TILT SHOT
Allows you to see the full frame of the character.
HANDHELD STEADICAM
This shoot allows you to feel like how the character feels by following their point of view.
TWO SHOT
This shot is used when two characters have the same intentions or are going the same way. It can symbolize or present a team, unity.
EXTREME LONG SHOT
This shot is more focused on the surroundings rather than the character themselves since the character is harder to see and focus on.
MID SHOT
The mid shot is used normally used on the protagonist characters during the resolution phase of the film.
|
PAN SHOT
It gives you a view of the character and the scene by capturing the background too.
BIRDS EYE VIEW
Allows you to see the whole of the surroundings including other characters.
CANTED SHOT
This is an angled shot that gives the audience a slanted view of the character. It is usually a shot that is used with the antagonists in the films.
LONG SHOT
The long shot is typically used with a group of characters because it allows all of them to be seen all at once.
MEDIUM CLOSE UP SHOT
This shot hides the characters body and focuses on the characters face more.
|
EXTREME CLOSE UP SHOT
This shot allows the audience to see the actors reaction close up
|
ESTABLISHING SHOT
This shot sets the scene for the audience by providing a clear view of the whole scene.
|
LOW ANGLE SHOT
This shot is used as the victims point of view which makes the antagonist seem bigger than the victim and therefore more dangerous.

10 ICONIC HORROR SHOTS BY SIMON AND LEXCYE
In this section, we had to roughly recreate some of the shots that you would be expected to see in a horror teaser trailer. This task allowed us to practice these shots and see which work better than others. In our actual horror production, we will try to use some of these shots effectively, recreating them with props and settings to match the genre.
Reasons for why we would use these shots
JUMP CUT AS APPROACHING CAMERA
|
TRACKING SHOT DOWN THE CORRIDOR
|
WEAPON BEING DRAGGED ON THE FLOOR
|
This would be useful in our horror trailer to use with the antagonist, jumping closer and closer towards the camera, building suspense.
WIPING BLOOD DOWN A WINDOW
This shot doesn't reveal the identity of who the antagonist is, leaving mystery on who the character is. The blood will connote danger.
SLOW MO BLOOD DRIPPING IN SINK
This shows that some sort of slaughter was committed by this character and therefore we sense that this person is dangerous.
FLICKERING LIGHT
Flashing lights in the darkness are very effective. This could tie in with the pacing of the trailer and make it more suspensive to watch.
|
This form of tracking shot would be ideally used in our trailer, following the antagonist with perhaps a weapon being dragged and slow footsteps.
EXTREME CLOSE UP ON IRIS
The iris is a very fragile part of the human body. A close up on this may represent the weakness and fright of the protagonist in the trailer.
BEHIND OPAQUE GLASS
This iconic horror shot doesn't reveal the identity of the antagonist. I would use this in my horror trailer because it connotes mystery through the blur.
|
We would use this type of shot in our horror trailer because it doesn't reveal the identity of the character but associates them as dangerous.
SHADOW OF A WEAPON
The shadow effect can be used in our trailer to disguise the antagonists identity. This connotes mystery as we don't know who's holding the weapon.
SLOW MO TRACKING OF FOOTSTEPS
This again doesn't reveal the identity of the antagonist which is vital in a horror teaser trailer. This is the reason why i would use this type of shot in my teaser.
